If you’ve enjoyed your journey around the What is Bitcoin? website and want to get in touch…

Well, I certainly don’t need to explain how email works.

But what on earth is Nostr?? What do all those letters and numbers represent?

If you’re new to Bitcoin, the chances of you knowing what Nostr is are close to zero. Even regular Bitcoiners may only have a hazy idea. Let’s dig into it…

Nostr is to Twitter (now called X) what Bitcoin is to your local currency (Dollar, Yen, Pound, Euro, etc.).

Just as Bitcoin is a secure, decentralised and much improved form of money, Nostr is a secure, decentralised and much improved form of Twitter / X.

In the same way you have a private and public key with Bitcoin, so to do you have a private and public key with Nostr.

Instead of being stuck with one interface to interact with other people, as you are with Twitter / X, with Nostr you can choose your interface. There are different software interfaces – often called clients – that all draw on data from the common Nostr platform.

Nostr clients include PrimalDamus, Plebstr, CurrentAmethyst, Coracle, Snort, Iris, noStrudel, Nostter, Nos and Nostur.

In summary, Nostr is social networking for both Bitcoiners – and also non-Bitcoiners – who want a decentralised way of communicating that can never be taken away from them, as long as their private Nostr key is kept secure.

That weird string of numbers and letters that you saw at the top of this page is my public Nostr key. This can be shared freely and is equivalent to your Twitter / X handle. This public Nostr key – always beginning with ‘npub’ – is basically your own, personal identity on Nostr.
